Abstract
Ch. XVI Rise of Prices

In this way it is — under these circumstances
- and from these causes that fresh and fresh
quantities of money find their way into the mint
and through the mint into the circulation. Hence
it is that a certain proportion will always be
found subsisting in a country between the
quantity of vendible commodities exclusive of
bullion - the quantity of bullion - and the
quantity of money coined money. Hence
it is that a glut of bullion will always
have a tendency at least to produce an increase
in the quantity of money, while though a glut of
any other co vendible commodity will not
have any such that tendency in any degree

In this way it is that an answer may be
found to a very question for which I have
in vain endeavoured to find an answer in Adam
Smith and other books — in what way mode is
it - under what circumstances, and by the operation
of what causes - and in what quantities
and proportions is it that coined money, in
fresh and fresh quantities finds its way
into the world. In this way it is that a
certain ruler or proposition will always be found existing subsisting
in a country, between the quantity of vendible
commodities exclusive of bullion - the quantity
of bullion - and the quantity of coined money
or at least the quantity of money. In this way
it is, that a glut of bullion will always have a
tendency at least to produce an increase in the quantity
of money, of all sorts taken together though a glut
of any other sort of vendible commodity will not have that tendency [+]
[+] tendency in any
degree.
