Exchequer Notes
Of all the prerogatives which the constitution
has reposed in the hands of the crown sovereign of <add>in this country</add>, there is
perhaps no one, none which has been acquiesced in with
experienced a more general
more generally acqui satisfaction acquiescence been exercised with less complaint than that of the monopoly
of the coinage.
This acquiescence branch of the prerogatives which like most
then originated was planted in force and has taken root in
usage is equally rooted in utility yet utility and equally incontestable, has been the fruit of it as with those a fruit which then will we shall presently have occasion to point out.
Note
The subject of the monopoly may be considered as consisting being of the
exclusive right of certifying to all whom it may
concern that the piece of metal in question is
of a certain weight and fineness. The officers of
the King's Mint preform as in relation to the
facts in question the office sort of service so rendered by Notary
Public in relation to the authenticity of deeds: a service
which those in the instance of the subject in question
they are the better enabled qualified to render inasmuch
as it is to them and them only that the facts in
question, the weight and fineness of each piece of
pretious metal and thence the value of it can
be known without trial be th exactly known, since
it was they and they only that predetermined it.
Compare the advantage resulting to the community from the
monopoly in the two instances, we shall find it in
every point of view greatly superior in the instance
of the paper currency to what it is in the instance of the metal currency.
