Gunpowder Plot prevented by Anonymous Informers

The topic of anonymous information is a
ground on which those who answer of the security regard the institution of
the Board as an obstacle to their enterprizes will
wait for it, for the purpose of attacking it with the
weapons of common place rhetoric, and with vulgar
the benefit of a certain portion of vulgar prejudice on their side. Is it intended that the
Board shall receive anonymous information? — is
a question that will not scarcely fail to be asked. — Before
any direct answer is given to it this question there
a few observations will may not be out of
place. Such opinions to go of </del>

1. In the first place no refusal, on the part of the Board,
to refuse
require such information, would be any impediment
to the conveyance of it: since while the Post continues to
be a channel of communication, there is no person
existing by whom, nor any, in or out of office, to
whom, such information may not be sent.</del>

2. In the next place, whence lies the whence comes the mischief of
anonymous information when it happens to be
mischievous? — not in solely from its being anonymous — not merely in
from the author Of being unknown: — two things are requisite to convert the danger into actual
to make it to render the mischief of it greater than that of information that it be false, and that it be
acted upon as if it were true. from persons to the effect from persons </del>

3. There are some Instances Cases may be mentioned in which
the most violent prejudiced declaimer against anonymous
information will not deny its being not only useful
to the public but harmless to the individual —</del>

One is where a crime is as yet but meditated, and an anonymous
informant, without saying by whom meditated
gives such information of it by means of which it is simply
prevented without any person's being called to account
for it. Newgate is intended to broke open tomorrow night —
The Bank is intended to broke open tomorrow night. A quantity of smuggled goods lies concealed in such or such a hole or cave. Suppose a set of are at work in such or such a place.
