It has been will be seen, that the lower smaller the principal
sum of the note, the more better qualified it is
to serve in lieu of each and the greater a given sum of it the greater the
addition which a given sum of it mass it makes to the sum of national
wealth. The Our object therefore will be to
reduce the quantum the sum specified in these
notes to be as small in dimension as possible.
What can not be done in this way in the first
instance may perhaps be effected by degrees.
To begin A note conveying an annuity of
no more than a farthing every other day — or
at least a farthing every day might at first
proposal the first contact appear too minute and inconsiderable
to be worth purchasing. But when
a note conveying a farthing a day for instance
had got footing and oprea in the
and the habit of attaching a value an idea to it
had become established itself, the connection
from thence to a note for half the sum
would be smooth and easy. The & same sum
which if presented by itself and in the first
instance would have been treated with contempt,
may by reference and in virtue of its relation
to another sum of which it constitutes an
aliquot viz: the half be supported upon
the ground there already made, and by its capacity
of making up with the half and addition of
another such, a note of a magnitude the importance
of which had + + got footing in most minds been established in expectation
