LAW

can he not feed thy children? The Treasury of
Heaven can it not supply what is yet wanting
to in an Episcopal revenue? Is it worse to
thee to have no more than to Lindsey
to have nothing?

I know—favour 1 is 3 not easily to be found
2 for the advocates of conscience in that man's
sight who has all—for his confessor.
Who has the feeling D—for his one of his upper servant—The pious consistent
D— who pious grief on being called [when his country's
service called him] on the sabbath to his duty
from his devotions
to his duty

forgot who it was that who [prefer'd to the sabbath
the drawing of an asp out of the a pit.] postponed
the Sabbath.
in whose eyes [the
observance of] the
Sabbath was of less
moment than the drawing
saving of an Asp out
of the pit.

What hast thou to do with hope? Alas! thou thy
art name is already in the Black Book of Heretics
thou art rebellious unfaithful, for thou hast thought
to think thou art seditious, for thou hast written.

Stand forth boldly before among thy degenerate Brethren.
Cast off all temperaments & disguises Open to them thy bosom — Confound
them by the splendor of avowd integrity —
Urim & Thummim
Tell them thou art the champion of that Jesus
whom they persecute. Say to them, why
kick ye against the pricks?
In resolute accents
Say to them — O generation of vipers, a voice
has warned me to flee from the wrath to
come — But what voice shall prevail
with you against the joint voices of cowardice,
& interested pride?

All this and a thousand times as much more
will not illuminate the dark intellect, nor
warm the clay-cold heart of orthodoxy — It
must be force, such force as liberty allows, the
rightful power of the Legislator, set to work by virtuous
men.

I am apt to think that according to the wisdom
of this world, the instinct of their ... resentment
proves no bad counsellor, when it teaches them
to prefer to contempt, and as a
cloke to meanness to wrap themselves in
scorn
oppression.

SUBSCRIPTION.
---page break---

There is one way in which Subscriptions
may do mischief—It is by the influence of
the particular errors they may inculcate.

There is another way in which Subscriptions
may do mischief—it is by the mischievous
habit they introduce force men into, the mistrust of reason.
This way they take to do mischief is the least
direct & obvious, but it is not the least+ sure.
+ pernicious powerful nor
the least

++ It will not be
denied

It is allowed ++ that if one had a given quantity

of errors & absurdities & mischievous opinions
to circulate, this if any would be the only way
of in the world to make it go down: we see the like
[violent] [methods of violence & constraint] effected
in supporting all the extravagancies of Mahometanism
& Popery — We see it inefficacious ineffectual
towards promoting compassing it's only steadily avowed end, the
prevention of disputes—We see in this Kingdom Country
where it is established, disputes rising upon
disputes, precisely upon account of it: ## because it is established. We

see in other countries where it is not established
where the opinions which it is designed to suppress
are suffer'd to be expressed, and all sorts of other
opinions which it is never expected to suppress
men living without dispute.

For any every one of the opinions which it professes to put out of
dispute, one might produce 20 & if that were
not enough 200, which it professes not to meddle
with, each equally obnoxious liable to dispute.

This the acknowledged
best
mode for propagating
falsehood

When a man is forced to say, I believe, when he does
not believe, will he not be more angry than if
he were left to do as he thinks proper — Will he
not be more apt to complain? will not his aversion
repugnance
to the opinion be more violent?

The tyranny
engenders indignation

The notion of Revelation, as something which is worse
better than, distinct from, & something which can
serve a man instead of, & what he may avail
himself of without his reason

Give up reason & have recourse to Revelation?
'Tis as if one should say +, What have you to do
with hands? Chop off your hands, here are Have not
& for thee?

+ to the Husbandman Take my word
Do as I bid you
Spades & Mattocks
for you
