moral- instructions
The moral instructions given by a Tutor to his Pupil
are fairly reducible turn upon to the following heads;
tho these may be more than what always are
included.
1st To attend Lectures, particularly those on
Greek Testament.
2. To wear a Band.
3. Not to wear laced cloaths
4. Not to get drunk
5. To attend prayers constantly.
6. Not to have any intercourse with women.
7. Not to outspend his allowance.
8. Not to keep late hours.
9. To pay constant reverence in all things
to superiors; viz: Academical superiors, for
others are little though of.
10. Not to attempt to think for yourself: but to
pay an implicit deference to received opinions.
Not that these rules are apt to be practiced
but upon the occasion of their being infringed. transgressed.

Offences Things evil only by accident, as intercourse with
women, and offences merely local guarded
against than things constantly and essentially
evil.
Prudence alone cultivated, probity neglected.
I should like much to see that man, who could
tell me he ever imbibed the least spark of
public virtue from the instructions of his Tutor.

or the unintelligible & cloudy notions of some ancients, the crude & incoherent
dreams of Cicero Plato or Aristotle, or the
still more incoherent dreams of some
ecclesiastic visionary.
