These say, our opinions are the truth. Nay
not so, say the others, but our opinions. Who
shall decide between us them? No one. No one either

The contempt for a person is apt to extend itself
to his opinions, and in consequence as a part of them to
his instructions. for in short what is it that
can be the object of contempt any more than
of esteem but either his actions or his opinions?

good things fall into contempt with the teacher
and the rest of his instructions.

Had he known how to have placed them in
their proper foundation, had he rested them
on the principle of utility, they would have
stuck. whatever had become of the rest which had no such foundation. But this is not to be expected
from a College Tutor. Blinded and impelled
by prejudices, he can see knows no better
ground for them his own than authority, at least than the opinion
of what he calls the world, that is the minute
part of it that comes under his own eye, men
of the like station and character with himself. v.B

Tutors contemptible -
good instructions
shaken
off with the
bad.
In young minds from respect once shaken, the
transition is not difficult, to contempt: that

A character of supported
falshood
A man who all his life long has been and
will continue to be acting a part, is a
character that is and must ever be contemptible.

contempt once conceived is apt not to confine
itself to the proper parts of a character,
that exerted it but to extend itself to the indiscriminately
to the whole: it extends itself to
the whole mass of the man's opinions, and to
his instructions as part of them; the more particularly
to his instructions from the disgust
many of them must may have given by the futility
of the matter, and many others by the stupidity
of the manner.

Now among the many useless or pernicious things
the Tutor may have taught his pupil, some
he must have taught, to save his own credit
that are good: the mischief therefore is, that these
