the Echo of all
their blindest prejudices.

Will "Legislators are said to compell" why "to
compell?" because the motive they present
has got the name of Punishment? No - but
because they motive they present is such, as [+] [+] they think
men are [thought] not [to be] ordinarily able to resist. + + capable of resisting.
You compel not ?! who then ever shall compell?
What Inquisitor ever compelled the
Heretic to recantation? What Robber ever compelled
a man the traveller to yield his purse?

We compell not - we it is not our doing, we hope
we believe it is not done — Alas! sometimes
it may be done - for what man shall restrain
the secret corruption of the heart? but ordinarily
we do believe it is not done — but grant
that it is ever so often done it is deplorable we lament it - it is wicked but what follows?
the wickedness is their's - Why will they do so - We
do but as the Law ordains - We are but the
instruments of the Law —

Have ye not clasped it to your bosom? is it
not of all things, (your benefices always excepted) the dearest

object of your affections - Would it exist a moment
were it not for you? Have you not
moved heaven and earth hell to keep fix it?

Newdigate
Observe the inconsistency of Sr Roger Newdigate -
He urges the King's Coronation Oath
as a reason against any alterations being
made in the Ecclesiastical affairs - at
the same time that the acquiesces in the daily
administering daily imposition of so many Oaths Vows impossible
to be observed, & defends that of so many
others.

to make out, that ever yet took up
the pen. I am confident it never will be
attempted. They all go upon another
ground: the sole ground on which they
can keep up the appearance of defence is they
being obliged to
make
say the professions making such professions keeps them
from doing harm.

With men of true Religion, with men of
false Religion, with men of no Religion,
wheresoever virtue is in honour, the name
of Lindsey will be respected.

In a profession so corrupt, so alienated at one
from the
and from the spirit of their own institutions
here and there, perhaps a Chambers may be found;
but of Lindsey's there are is but one.

They were not perhaps in every respect
good citizens, [but] at least however they were Martyrs:
You? degenerate race? ye are as
far from being Martyrs as good Citizens
Your Their weaknesses you ye inherit + - + are your's: and
more than their
weaknesses
but where
is their [zeal their] integrity resolution?

They did not always perhaps in all things what was
right. but at least did they, what they thought
so

sincere, it is a vow of folly -

We know where there are [In other countries] there are vows of poverty
vows of celibacy, both foolish vows: but the
most foolish of all vows, if it were voluntary,
must be a vow of folly.

I dare not say that those trusts, important
as they are, at least as they are thought to
be, ought to be abandoned to those who are
least fit for it — that none shall enter
into an institution which requires wisdom
to fulfill the ends of it, but those who
can sign a certificate of [their] folly with
sincerity — that the order should be - solely peopled by
a race of men from whence the best that can
be expected hoped for is that their practical
principles may be inconsistent with their
speculative, their actions with their professions,
and that perhaps they may do no
harm. For how any man alive should
do the more good for entertaining making such professions <add>as for</add> entertaining
such opinions, is what would puzzle the an acute
