Εαλος μοι κεινος ομως αιδαο πυληοι
Ος χ᾽ ετερον μεν κευθει ενι φρεσι, αλλο δε βαζει
Hom.Il.

Either There of<add>A right opinion upon these matterseither is of importance
or it is not. If it is not, why be at all
this pains, and put such numbers of men
to some such meanness to compass it? Why
torment men upon your own account of the matter,
to that purpose? for no use? If it is, mark the consequences of such
an engagement.- they are these. If no
opinion contrary to the opinions in question subscribed to
are likely to does come into a mans head, then
once more subscription is of no use. If it
does there are but two things then can to be done.
One is to confess it: the consequences of
this, abandonment of subsistence resignation, beggary and
ruin. The other is, to make as if one had
it not. The first is an event barely possible
one or two instances have shown it to be so.
happen'd to prove it so

The other is next to certain.

How I would be glad to know what there is
in this to be so anxious for? to move heaven
and earth to gain? to entertain wrath &
bitterness and fury against men for opposing?
What there is for a man to plume congratulate himself
upon if he gains preserve + it? What there is to be + keep it on foot?
mortified about, if he lose it he loses it,
if it happens++ no longer? What is society submits
the better with it? What would it be the
worse without it?

Blind selfishness of the orthodox: they
make a crime of wishing to come in
for a share of those ( signities & inducements of which
possess and execise the monopoly.

SUBSCRIPTION

Subscription in fact can be no check upon
a man of that simplicity of character, that
openness, that in imperviousness that veracity,
that courage [+], thatwhich Christians are by their Law commanded [+] in avowing what shews itself to them for truth
to assume, and that which the first Christians did actually assume,
and that which the very men who exact
Subscriptions, persuadedo their endeavours, on other occasions when they
are off their guard and do not see the consequences,
to persuade them men to assume.

It is true this delicacy is valued by discerning
moralists no otherwise than it is an accompaniment
of that probity which respects the
dealings between man and man [+]. They commonly [+] and which alone it is for the interest of society requires to be to have kept up.
go together: at least he who has the first
is seen commonly to have the second. The possession of the 1st serves
as a presumption of thepossession of other: the relinquishment
of the 1st maymust accordingly seem to carrya certain degree
a presumption of the relinquishment of the other.

and so it will continue to do till a clear line
of separation distinction is drawn between them.

An implicit but effectual convention.

Christ and the Apostles guilty of an
oversight in not appointing Subscriptions
it is a sign [+] they could not look into ity how littleill they understood the way of bringing to effect their own designs, and how little they were able to look
especially as the Heresies that started
up in that ageimmediately after or indeed even in
their own times are allowed to be more
absurd and extravagant and pernicious
than any that appear now.

It is a pity they never thought of that
excellent expedient to preserve true doctrine
to ordain or at least to recommend, that
as soon as any part got the ascendant
in temporal power they should fall to
work and make a catalogue of their opinions
which right or wrong, all those whom
they could work upon by worldly fears or hopes
