It imposes on them
an obligation to receive
analogous to that
of women except
that the one is as
pernicious as the
other is useful

Happiness
Temper

The reserve of priests
proceeds from their
being condemned
to error, as that
of women from their
being condemned to
ignorance

Hostile to
Improvement
in Divinity

It is a point of
good breeding not
to talk to priests
upon points connected
with religion,
as it is
not to talk to
women upon points
connected with a
certain class of pleasures

What if in chemistry
the Law
had decided by Subscription between
the Phlogistic &
Aphlogistic system?

Disposit. Breach
of
Official Duty

Education

16
Priests being the
persons in whose hands
various circumstances
concur to throw
the education of youth,
it corrupts education.

Education
corrupts it.

17
It necessitates the
preceptor to inculcate
into his pupil
an aversion to the
virtues of courage, &
sincerity, and to the
talent of close reasoning.
To make him afraid of his
own reason & him from quarrel
with his friend.

Discredits cause

It brings the Religious
Sanction into contempt
by shewing it to have
no force over its professed
& hired advocates.

Education
weakens its influence.

19
Brings Tutors into
deserved contempt — them
acting a part "all their
lives long" — and with
the instructors, the instruction.

Education corrupts
enfeebles understand

20
Obliges a Tutors to
corrupt the character
of the pupil, by
breaking his spirit
& teaching him to
think meanly of his
reason — to repress
inquisitiveness & confidence, the
necessary preparation
to the investigation of
& adherence to truth.

21.
It is a contempt of
the Scriptures by substituting
another standard
in their room.

Education corrupts.

absolutely incompatible
with that of an
Opposition Patriot.

partizans — arguing &
voting against their own opinion.

Dissenters

Arguments against
tolerating them.

1. Let them in to
the Church they will
overthrow overturn it the establishment
.

2. Let them in, &
you let Deists &
Atheists in along
with them
.

3. The cry Dissenters
and Antisubscriptionists
make is not for
conscience sake,
but for the sake
of the loaves & fishes
.

Subscription
Outréd

1. If good for University
men &c why
not for all others
children in cradle,
women &c.

2. Subscription the
very course to take
of our hand Mahometanism
or any other
acknowledged system
of error to propagate
& enforce.

3. Obstacles
Men naturally
prefer the advice of
defending to the
shame of retracting.

Intolerance Modes

1. That the Parents
should be starved rot in a jail.

2. That these children
should be universally
ignorant and profligate

Intolerance Argts

Preventn overthrowing
&c.

Dissenters
Arguments against
tolerating them answered.

Answer to Arg-1.

Answ. 1. Whatever
they do, good or bad
they can not do in
the first instance
without a majority
of Parlt. nor do
finally without a
majority of the Nation.
Who are they
that say we are
in the right, tho'
a majority of the nation
were against us?
and what regard wou'd
they deserve were
they to say so?

2. What is meant
by overturning the
Establishment? Is it
meant, amending
it, making the alterations
here proposed?
But these are
here proved to be useful
and necessary,
and to overturn it
in this sense is only
to amend it.

3. Is it meant
that people who approve
of the establishment
i:e: Form of
worship upon its present
footing will
not have the liberty
observing it? But
by this plan that
liberty is ensured
to them.

This is to say
that the effect of
a reform proposed
with no other view
nor on any other
footing than to establish.

Dissenters

establish liberation,
will have the effect
of establishing intolerance
in its room,
and this at a period
where toleration
is become in vogue
even amongst the
most persecuting sects.

Subscription

If they were meant
as Articles of Peace.
If Peace were
meant to be obtained
by Subscription
the way to attain
it in that manner
— to enjoin Subscription
to Peace.
The test would
then be a declaration
in favour of
Toleration.

How is it possible
for a man
to pretend these
to be meant as Articles
of Peace?
By refusing to look
at them or by shutting
the book &
substituting to the
words of the articles
the word Peace — Is
there any thing
in language that
men will not maintain
pronounce, when adequate
motives are given them
for it?

Mahometanism The
would by the same
means be pronounced
an Apology
for Christianity</p>

Dissenters

Answer to Arg. 2.

1. The letting in
Deists & Atheists must
mean either letting them
in simply as fellow-worshippers,
or as
Ministers.

1. As <add>mere

fellow-worshippers,
it is not easy
to see what inducement
they should have to come
in more than they had have
before at present — But suppose
them to come in, where
is the harm? This is
as much as to say, it
is a harm that Deists
and Atheists should become
or at least appear
to become converts to
Christianity? Does it
lie in the mouth of a

Christian to say so?

2. As ministers —
This argument supposes
that they are kept
out of the Ministry at
present, at least more
than they would be
then — But if they any
are kept out, now
it can only be by
conscience, or at least
by something that would
be called conscience in
one who was not an
unbeliever.

More than this if they
are kept out it must
be by their being more
conscientious

Dissenters.

conscientious, more
virtuous than
Christians, for it is certain
that many
Xtians sign the subscribe to the
tenets in question
who do not believe
them all.

But if Atheists
& Deists are more
virtuous than Christians
where is the
harm of Deism or
Atheism? If Christians
are less virtuous
than Deists or Atheists
where is the temporal use of
Xtianity?

What is certain
is that if Atheists
will subscribe, they
are just as much
at liberty to become
ministers as
they would be these;
and if any do forbear
to subscribe
& come in that
would wish to come
in, it must be in
consequence of such
a measure of virtue
as is very uncommon but too rare
even among
believers.

If Atheists are a
set of men who choose of so a conscience as to
rather to forego a
provision for life than
be defile themselves
with a questionable
species of immorality
of which the detection
is impossible Atheism
is the best religion, and
the propagation of it is one of the best services that can be rendered to society mankind.

Intol. Plans of
Defence

Answers to Arg. 3.

This is as much as the outcry
of the monopolist against
the fur trader?
It is not unreasonable
for us to claim the
whole. It is unreasonable
for you to claim
any part.

It makes hardly
credible without experience
that selfishness
should be able to
work itself up to such
a pitch of blindness.
But so it is.

Diversity of opinions
is no otherwise
desirable than as
absence of quarrels
is desirable — than
as it tends to breed
quarrels. Put quarrels
out of the case
diversity of opinion
promotes conversation
and exercises the
mental powers.

Intolerance creates
the very mischief
it complains of like
just like corrupt
influence — As intolerance
provokes opposition
so corruption
invites it.

Objections

1. Reform in church
is contrary to the Corronation
Oath — .

2. To the Union — Blackstone

The cruellest as well as
the foolishest tyranny if
it could be established would
be that of the dead over the
living: the foolishest of
all slavery would be that of
submitting to such tyranny.

2. The Dissenters themselves
would be equally
intolerant if they had
the power.

Answer. They are pledged
to toleration over & above
by every thing they
ever wrote in pain
of everlasting imfamy
.

Tolerant Popery better
a thousand times over
than intolerant Protestantism.

Intoler. Mischiefs
Weakens the Laws.

When they say they have
the laws in foot without
wishing them to be executed
they say what is false
& what they know to be
so = and the proof of it
is that were they to wit
ever so to all the time
executed what they would do
in more ? towards it than
they do.

Who ever spent a day or afternoon
in conversation on that
on the most ordinary
subjects who did not
observe many instances
of difference of opinion.
And yet in an
is to be sworn to be
points the more abstract.

If as too much to
join the houses of
and moderation to
the profit
of tyranny and intolerance

Conduct of Reform
— Obstacles

ought not
to be expected: they
ought not to be asked
for: they ought not to be
received. Slaves ought
not to be suffered in a
free country although
they would be slaves.

Those who have preferment
can not appear
without the hazard of
their reputation: those
who have more without
the forfeiture of their
livelyhood. Such is
the malignancy of
that most flagitious of
all tyrannies: it is of
all others that which stands/slams
the door the closest without
redress.
