If this be
just, God, are
According to this notice
whatever evidence of
persuasion without
evidence is sufficient
to satisfy me
of the truth of my proposition
in this line,
the same is sufficient
to satisfy me that
every other human
creature is banned
under the penalty or pain
of incurring the Divine
vengeance to believe
it. every controverted
point obliges
punishes somebody
for not
believing what is
not true.

themselves to the imagination as the same thing.
No action is less able than this to bias the test of
calm cool examination. Truth in itself the abstract is whatever it is
whatsoever we may think of it A true proposition
which I call true is true in itself or not independently
of what I think of it of what it appears to be
to me: but the only evidence I can have of its truth
is the sensation persuasion I have of its apparent probability
as it is appears to me. If according to this notion
of truth, which is the only one I can form of it
in any instance, [the obligation on the part of all the world to believe a thing
would follow] no sooner did a proposition of this
nature appear true to me, than all the rest of the
world must to my apprehension be bound to believe
it. An observation that seems to have created
these hungerers after objects of faith is just that whatever
ground I have my persuasion affords me, for believing in my way another
man's persuasion must afford him the same ground
believing in his: what follows? that God seeing
this and having made it so imposes on me the
obligation of believing a thing, and on my neighbour
of not believing it. But it is not pretended that a given
proposition
