that as in the one case time there is nothing for a
master to teach, so in the other there is nothing
or next to nothing for the legislator to do: and that as in the one
case whatever is taught must be absurdity or
nonsense, so in the other whatever is done
will be with little or no exception may <add>must come with little or no exception under the heads of</add> tyranny, or

The particular mischiefs
which it is resulting from
death to give birth
to and does give
birth to in this

further on.

By striking thus at the root a great deal
of business may be done at once: but as men's
adherence to inveterate practices and opinions
is a seldom scarcely to be loosened by a in so few words,
and as the systems of Ecclesiastic Polity instituted
in Europe have and in England in

7 Church Note to p 5

5 (a)
In all other departments
of knowledge
the absurdity of partial & forcible
or partial intervention
is universally
recognised.
(a) In less enlightened periods some of the most important
as well as of the most frivolous questions were
decided belonging to the arts and sciences were decided
by pains and penalties and almost always in favour of that
side which is now universally acknowledged to be the
wrong one. Those, for instance, concerning the existence of innate
ideas, the figure of the earth, and the circulation
of the blood were for example as every one knows
of the number. These decisions are never cited
now by men of of any persuasion at least by Protestants of any
persuasion denomination but for their absurdity.
