could have meant part in contradistinction to whole.

Before the word person was made use of in
speaking of the Godhead, it was applied to
the human species and that only. It was
synonymous to the word man: with this only difference
to its advantage that it comprised the whole
species without ambiguity, and without being exposed
to the suspicion of putting an exclusion upon
either sex or any age.

The word person was thus the occasional
representative of the word man in its most
extensive sense: and it never expressed either more
or less than the one entire man whom it was
put to represent.

When made use of as a technical word in
the science of Grammar its significance became
in a certain sense & degree enlarged. In the case of
the first and second person indeed it continued
pretty much precisely upon the same footing. By The first person
was meant the first man, the man who speaks.
or the men who speak By the second person was meant the second
man or the man who is spoken to the second
men or the men who are spoken to - Why? because it
