2 Athan Church

it is not usual for any other beings than animals
nor any other animals than men to either to
speak to or to be spoken to in grammatical discourse

By the third person was meant man also:
but not man only: because beings things of all sorts
might as well be spoken of as men. Even
here person is not representative of a thing:
for though things may be spoken of as well as
persons yet it is not in contemplation of the
application of it made to things that a pronoun or verb is
said to be in the third person, but only in
contemplation of the application made of such
men.

Thus much at any rate is incontestible:
that whether it were applied employ'd to represent a man
or to represent a thing it never was employ'd
to represent either more or less than the
whole man or the wh of the object it was put for: one
person was the whole man before spoken of, neither
more nor less: one thing two persons even the
two men before spoken of neither more nor
less: and so with regard to things.

3 Church Athan

When instead of representing man it was put
to represent a God, what was the consequence? - that
it represented the whole of the God spoken of neither
more nor less. One be where person had been
put for for man three persons meant either three
men or nothing: so when the same word person
was put for God, either three persons meant three Gods
or they meant nothing. [To say three persons
make but one God is just precisely the same thing as
to say that three Gods make but one God.]
To say three persons make but one man, where
person is put for man is just the same thing
as to say, three men make but one man.
To say three persons make but one God, where
man is put person is put for God is to say
three Gods make but one God.

Oh but says the objector though person when applied to
man signifies nothing less than the whole man, this
is not the case where person is applied upon the
occasion in question to the Godhead: it here signifies
not the whole Godhead, but a part only of
the Godhead. If you ask me what part, I answer readily
