8 Athan Church

The rhapsody of some half-mad half-idiot priest,
made put together nobody knows when by nobody
knows who (for it is acknowledged and even maintained
by the most Orthodox not to be the production
of the wretched worthless incendiary whose name it bears)
this rhapsody is dubbed with a degree species of sanctity
which is not and which most certainly ought
not to be given to any book of scripture: it is given
as an improvem succedaneum to and improvement
upon scripture, and as explaining to
us those a necessary branch of science which the
scripture from which alone it is derived does
not explain so well. It is because a profession of adherence to Scripture
does not answer the purpose of preventing
honest doubts or wilful misrepresentations that
this matchless composition is given to us [+] as
[+] by the professed
adherents to Scripture,

being for both purposes superior to scripture.

He who believes in this creed in whom does he
belief believe? In God? no. In Mathew, Mark
Luke or John? no. In Athanasius? - not even
in him. But in nobody knows what forgotten nameless
scribbler whose name has been superceded
by that of Athanasius.

Upon what ground What then is the so much
boasted ground upon which you assume yourselves to be in
the right, your adversaries in the wrong, and
so much in the wrong that nothing less than
wretchedness in this world everlasting misery in a future one is their
due?

[But] this plea were it be it ever so true
can not save you: you have no right to plead
it. You have no ideas say you? — But you
are bound to have ideas. A man who barely
repeats words is not bound to have ideas: he gives
them as he finds them: he hands them on
as they come to him. A man who argues
who pretends to have formed a comparison, and
pronounces a judgment he is bound to have ideas:
for what but ideas can be judged of and compared?

Suppose a combination of words, sounds forming a <add>grammatical proposition</add> words in familiar
use or otherwise, delivered presented to us as having
been uttered by a voice from heaven, say from
God himself. In this case it might not be
unreasonably required that whosoever believed the proposition
