4. Another point of
view in which the
application of the necessary degree of coercion
to this purpose may
be vindicated
viz: the serving as
a branch of the police
against crimes
The accession of all these offices some several
of which are actually united to the which
under the English regimen can scarcely be necessary
to justify the small very moderate
sala allowance which is will be found really competent
to the service. The prevention of those practices
of all sorts by which the community happiness of society is
exposed to suffer in the present life is an object
which no one ever denied to come belong
within the competence of the civil magistrate.
And Those who think least favourably of the influence
of Religion will hardly deny but that
its preventive efficacy might at least under proper
management be directed applied with advantage to this purpose.

If there be neither truth nor utility in religion
revealed or natural there is nothing in an ecclesiastical
establishment as above described to prevent
those who are of that opinion from advancing
laying before the public the considerations
whatever they may be from whence that
opinion may have taken its rise. The payment
of a Professor for explaining the Newtonian philosophy
is no bar to any one imposes silence on no one who may thinks to whose eyes
he descries greater appearances of truth in that the system
the doctrines of Euler or DesCartes. We ought Care should be taken not to confound
with the expence of an establishment a species of tyranny
which has been accidentally interwoven with it.
