Part 5.
Suppose a man
determined to apply
this or that persuasion
on a dubious
point,- - Exclusion
& agglutination
the
necessary operations
which act with
joint & well
known efficacy.
No matter by the operation of what cause, suppose a
man determined now induced to employ his the native powers power of his
mind in the endeavour to produce for in his own breast on one side or other
of any such dubious or controverted front a persuasion
a persuasion to which, in respect of the uneasy sensation uneasiness
so naturally attendant on a state of doubt or conflict, he
will naturally be find himself disposed to give whatsoever the utmost degree of
intensity which it is in his power to give. For this purpose Exclusion
and agglutination, these two operations as above described
are thus both of them at his command: these and no other:
and as they go hand in hand, and, on the part of
the active faculty, cost together as it were no more than an effort,
great as experience in all ordinary cases testifies is their joint conjunct efficacy.
