Church II Topics Ch.6.
6 §.1 Abstract
Part 5 over persuasion
Intellectual
authority unsupported
by coercive
is (especially
in matters of religion)
slow even on
the side of truth
Authority on the
side of error antagonizes
with
that on the side
of truth, - the passion
& interest, with
reason, which
the conflict is
complicated by
indigenous persuasion
arising
from the nature
of the case.
Unsupported by coe authority of the coercive kind
the growth of authority of the intellectual kind, even when it its operation is on the
side of truth, is especially in the field of religion, precarious
and comparatively slow. Authority on the side
of truth finds authority on the side of the opposite error
to oppose it: when Reason is on the side of Truth, passion
a still more powerful combatant will frequently is very apt be found
ranging itself and operating on the other: and of interest singly acting
or preponderant interest is deci in the conception of the
mind in question decidely decidedly on the side opposite to
that on which Reason stands, the power with which Reason
operates is of course equal to 0. And along with these conflicting
authorities, indigenous persuasion - grounding itself on
the particular nature of the subject, sort of the particular part of the field which is in question will, with a degree of
readiness and facility proportioned to the strength and plenitude repletion
of each [mans] mind be apt to start up and rendering
the construction the more complicated, render the issue proportionably
uncertain and slow.
