15 Feby 1813 Church Note (a)
Ch.6. Qualified
*8 §.2. Abstract fitness
Part 5. Power over

Forcitlble may
seem a bad
attribute of deception,
- But here the
force is applied
to B A the deception
operated in
B. Coercive
authority the
inceptive power
on the in the
one case - Understanding
operating
on understanding
- in the other.

To deception, considered as the subject, forcible will
be apt to present itself as an ill-associated attribute.
So Such it would be in effect, if the person to whom
the force is spoken of as being applied and the person
in whom the deception is spoken of as being produced
were one and the same. But in this case the two persons,
it will be seen are essentially different: to A alone is the force
applied; on B alone is the deception produced. Intell
Coercive authority is the instrument in the one case; Intellectual
authority, in the other case. In the first case
it is by the influence of will on will that the effect is
produced; in the other case it is by the influence of
understanding on understanding that the effect is produced.
