6 Jany 1812 + 2o Church II Topics Ch 6.
3 p.1. Abstract
Part to VI Power over belief
measure

2 Feby 1813. not copied yet Proposed by 3o

In matters of
opinion the
force of authority is
as the absurdity
of the opinion which
it can cause a man
to embrace

In matters of opinion or belief, the form of authority
is measured by is on each occasion as the absurdity of the opinion which
on that occasion it can cause a man to embrace.

The more confirmed
a mans habit of
relying on authority
is, the greater the
probability of prevalence
of any authority on his
mind.

On all occasions taken together, The stronger a mans propensity disposition the better increased
and more confirmed the habit he is in of
believing in taking up his opinions upon the ground
of authority alone - of taking them upon trust, the
stronger is the force with which the greater the probability
of prevalence, with which any authority
that presents itself will act upon his mind

When a man is
guided by authority
alone, the
absurdity of a
propositions is
not obstacle to
his accepting it.
It is to the authority
his attention applies
It is only by attention
to the proposition
itself that any
absurdity can be
brought to view.

In so far as it is by authority and authority
alone that a mans beli [opinion] belief persuasion
is guided and determined, the absurdity of the proposition opinion
presents forms <add>constitutes</add> not any obstacle to the acceptance
of it. For in so far as it is by authority that
his persuasion is guided, it is to the authority alone
that his attention is applies itself. It is only by
an attention to the consideration of the nature of the proposition itself that
any absurdity with which it may happen to it to
be can be made to present itself to his view:
and by the supposition this attention consideration he does not
bestow.
