(2) 4 Power over Belief
Now
Chance of success is in endeavour obsequiousness to pay obedience
Obsequiousness is as the absurdity contained.
Therefore In so far as a man
is guided by authority
alone the most
absurd proposition
finds no more difficulty
in getting belief
than the most reasonable
one.
Forasmuch Forasmuch as in In so far as it is to by authority alone
that a mans persuasion is guided, forasmuch as the
absurdity of the proposition presents not any obstacle
to its acceptance, in so far as it is by authority
alone that his a mans persuasion is guided the most
absurd proposition finds no not in any case greater difficulty in obtaining
his acceptance than does the most reasonable
and manifestly true one
One case where
the more absurd
the proposition, the
more easily received
— viz. where merit
is attached to belief.
Moreover One case there is in which the instead of
increasing the difficulty of obtaining acceptance
in decreases with the absurdity of the proposition: and
that is where to persuasion on the one side on either side or the
other (it is generally on the affirmative side) the idea
of merit or demerit is attached.
Merit supposes
reward from
some source (moral
or relgious) demerit
punishment.
From one source or another — the idea of either <add>from the religious</add>
sanction or the moral sanction or both together — merit on the part of any mode of conduct supposes
the matter of good of th applied in the character of
the matter of reward or demerit matters of evil applying itself
in the character of the matter of punishment to be attached
to and consequent upon the performance observance
of it
