Creeds are an engine instrument still more destructive to intelligence
and probity than subscriptions are.

X 4
Creeds more destructive
to intelligence
& probity than subscriptions.

Subscription is but the act of the a moment.
If sincere, and the opinions subscribed to are absurd, it
is but the absurdity of the moment. If insincere, it is but
the insincerity, the weakness, the moral weakness of the
moment. In either case it leaves room for repentance redress remedy:
in case of error, for self-correction; in case of weakness, for repentance
and, separated by an interval of indefinite brevity may from
the moment of repentance from transgression may be the
moment of repentance.

Subscription the act
of the moment
it leaves room if
erroneous for self-correction
if arising from weakness,
for repentance &c

By the invention of a creed, the chasm whether
it be of error or of insincerity is swelled. Each time
the engine is set to work, the nose of the patient is
bowed down once more to the infernal grindstone. Each
time he swallows reswallows the poisonous deleterious sincerity-melting mess, the Church-of-Englandist
repultistics his own shame.

According to Milton, cannon casuistry had some devil

of higher rank and deeper malice was he that invented
creeds.

3 6
By invention of a
creed error or weakness
is confirmed —
A worse devil invented
creeds than
cannon.

be belied by his loss caused be deprived.

To the official leader of the band no such resource is left.
