Such Thus a creed was drawn up perhaps at this time
perhaps at that time, perhaps by a man with this
name — perhaps by a man with that other name —
What matters it could it ever be certainly so satisfactorily indubitably — be ascertained
— matters it at what time — what
matters it by what man by a man of what name?
The subject matters and sources of inference that even before then
are they not before us? the faculty of drawing inferences
is it perished with the those possessors? If they had possessed it, how
are we dist of it: in us is it not as well exercised
as in them? Is it not somewhat better exercised? have
we not in the interval time that between them and us has
intervened, has it been altogether barren of incident occasions
of subject matters of inference? On us has the faculty
less exercise than it had with them?
