Church II Topic
Ch. 6. Qualif Declarations

1 7

§. Abstract fitness
§ Subscriptn & Creeds

In one respect particular and one alone does the mischievous
mischief that has place the case of creeds prove itself
as falling short being inferior to that which has place in the case of
subscriptions In the case of creeds — viz of the three which
under Church of Englandism are in use, the ambiguity of in the case of them
all all of them, and the imposing named istabution appellation with which how groundlessly
so ever in the case of the creed called the Apostle's
the discourse is dressed up those circumstances
added to that of the supposed universality of this the acc
the acceptance given to them, seem to
more for
present a sort of undeniable demand for adoptive
persuasion, to the exclusion of any all such enquiry and
examination as would be a necessary preparation to that
mode of persuasion which is has been distinguished by the name of indigenous..

In one respect
only does the evil
of subsc creeds fall
short of that in
case of subscriptions
In case of the
creed under English
Church, the antiquity
of the names
they are draped up
with (however groundlessly)
present
a demand for adoption
without the
enquiry necessary
to ind form indigenous
belief.

By the mode indicated characterized by the word subscription
on the other hand, an examination of the sort in question
appears to be called for and in a manner presupposed —
It is to shew himself pure make proof of his purity from recent errors, that
the declaration is called for which has been imposed upon
him in this shape. Antient as the alledged grounds
are, the persuasion itself is confessedly of modern date — antient
as the text is — the original and sacred text — the interpretation
we thus can put upon it — the interpretation is of the correctness
of which he is required to declare himself persuaded, is
confessedly of modern comparatively recent date. . The Church from which the
Church in question he belongs to has separated is infested with swarms with errors:
from the errors it is required of him that he shew himself
to be pure. Other Churches which at the same time or
since have separated themselves from the same original stock — these
too swarm are all of them more or less infested and infected with
the like spiritual vermin: from these it is required of him that
he
he shew himself to
be free. (a)

(a) Note on another page.

By subscription
examination seems
called for & presupposed.
Though the text be
antient, the interpretation
is confessedly
modern, & to thus
himself free from
modern errors is
a man required
to subscribe.
