§. 1. Present abstract fitness.
Part 3. Subject of belief faith, of propositions are either texts or inferences
from texts.
Part 3. Subjects of faith [or belief], external or internal: external
are texts or inferences.
Where religion, considered, as that of Jesus, as derived
from revelation is the topic, the subject of belief or
disbelief, on any occasion whatsoever be the occasion, will
always be found referable to the one or the other of two descriptions;
viz a text or set assemblage of texts — i.e. a portion or assemblage mass
of propositions extracted contained word for word in that sacred volume
which is considered as comprising the whole matter of the
mass of discourse termed designated by the word revelation, and accordingly considered
as having for its author either the Almighty himself, or
some person or persons by him inspired — whatsoever be the
meaning attached to the word inspired; or a proposition
or assemblage mass of propositions, deduced from such text or
texts — deduced, by some person not inspired — in the
way of inference.
