Part 3
Among religionists in general it is no uncommon
case — even among those distinguished the those termed by the appellation
of Methodists it seems to be general, not to say universal,
to take in a case which affords appears to afford room for the
employment of the word faith to attach the idea of
merit to the act persuasion that has place — to the
act or and state of the mind whereby that persuasion is
entertained.
4
Among religionists
in general it is common, & among
methodists universal
to apply
merit to persuasion
under the name of
faith.
In these cases to entertain the persuasion in
question — to have faith in question is considered
as matter of duty, and it is to the fulfilment
of this duty that the idea of merit is attached; it is
to the act of fulfil fulfilling this duty that the judgment
of approbation is passed.
5
To possess it is
esteemed a duty — the
performing this duty —
a merit.
[In so far as this idea of duty these ideas of duty and merit is entertained
a natural not to say a necessary result, is — for
the will to apply itself to the judgment to apply
its force — its powers — to the judgment — for the purpose
of increasing the intensity of the persuasion entertained,
if not for the purpose or even from the first of forming it: of
which process the mode and consequences will come
presently to be spoken under another the next head.]
6
Of this idea the necessary
result is the
applying the force
of the will to
increase intensity
of persuasion. [of
which elsewhere]
