Ch. 6. Qualif. Declaration.
§.1. Abstract fitness
Part |^^^|.

The grand mischiefs to be the production of which
was to

Vitandu one moral
& one intellectual
evil — 1. insincerity
2. bigotry.

On the occasion of two capital mischiefs evils, the
one moral the other intellectual required to be avoided
with the utmost care. The moral evil, insincerity,
the intellectual evil blind perseverance in error,
or in one word bigotry.

To avoid insincerity
the course of was
plain — viz. to do
nothing. If no
declaration be
required no insincerity
can be
produced.

For avoidance of insincerity, the course was
plain and easy. It required nothing but to be done:
it was purely quiescent: it was purely negative. In matters of opinion Insincerity
is where has place in so far as a man
declares to be his an opinion which is not his. Let no
declaration of opinion be required, no insincerity in
this shape will be produced.

So—to prevent
bigotry. To swerve
from any declared
opinion will
appear matter of
shame.—It will
be matter of merit
not to profit by
experience:—a mark
of wisdom to resolve
not to grow no wiser
of humility to
pronounce himself
infallible.

By the same simple and quiet means will the
production of the intellectual evil bigotry be prevented.
In the opinion which of which a man has made a
public declaration ever so absurd even in his own eyes
it will in his eyes internally appear matter of shame and
demerit to be known to swerve from it, matter
of merit to be thought to adhere to it. In his eyes
spite of the all absurd in dispute absurdity it will be matter of merit
not to to refuse to derive instruction power profit by from observation or experience
from the more any clearer and more attentive observation
made either by his own or any other mind: it
will be matter of merit not to shut the door against information:
it will be a mark of wisdom to resolve
and to persevere in resolving never to grow wiser. It will
be a mark of humility in a man — of christian humility,
to pronounce himself infallible or to act as if he were so.
