Ch. 6. Qualif declarations

§ 1 Abstract fitness
Part. Succedaneum

After P' Mischief
§.1. Present abstract fitness
Part Church of Englandism[, while subscriptions remain] is not [the Christianity
religion of Jesus.]

The temporal being the only point of view in which
in this work work religion in general, and the religion of
Jesus in particular, is all along considered, it may be a
question, whether, strictly properly speaking, those the system of
opinions professed by any of the persons by whom those declarations
of persuasion which are in use are made be entitled
to the appellation of Christianity, and themselves to the appellation
of Christians. Of those poems of Pope's which
by himself are stiled his Pastorals, an observation made
by one of his critics, is — that properly speaking
they are not Pastorals; but that as they are something
still better than Pastorals, their non-pastorably their
not answering exactly to their names the appellation
given to them is an impropriety not much to be regretted.

The temporal being
the only point of
view in which
religion in &c is
all alo considered here,
it may be a question
whether the system
of opinions contained
in the creeds &c
as above be
entitled to the
name — Christianity
— and the
professers — Christians

Popes pastorals &c

In like manner, if though not Christianity the religion
professed by these declarants the set of declarants in question were any thing better,
the mere circumstance of its not being properly coming
under that denomination would not hardly suffice to warrant
the adding of giving to this departure a place in the
catalogue of mischiefs — temporal, worldly mischiefs. Considering
however that whether it be or be not entitled
to a place in this such a catalogue, the departure may not
improbability in the eyes of those any such persons
whom it may happen to be satisfied of its existence — present
itself as in the character of an additional reason, nor that an inconsiderable
one, for wishing and endeavouring to rid the society
community of so baleful a nuisance, the observations
that follow may appears appear not altogether out of place.

So if though not
Xtianity it be
something better —
the circumstance
of its not coming
within that name
can not be classed
among temporal
evils — but considering
that
this aberration will
be a rea another reason
with some for
getting rid of this
nuisance, what
follows is is not
altogether out of place
