Church II Doctrine
Ch. Recantation

4 4

To whatsoever opinion it happens to be espoused by the
possessors of power — and in particular by the possessors of power
operating by the application of the matter of reward of
a man sinning against conscience in being conscious
of error and thence of transgression of moral duty in
respect of whatsoever he says or does in support of it
true it is that there will always be a probability: — a probability
having, as above, for its measure the quantity of the matter
of reward lodged in the hands of the possessors of power,
and applicable to the purpose of being applied applied disposed
of in the shape of rewards and encouragement, to in the
purchase of service in this crooked sinister shape.

If an opinion be true, it is not in the power even of the vilest most untrustworthy
of mankind by adopting it to cause it to be false. But in the case of any such speculative
opinion at least, the
moment it is seen that
by from the support of it a
man has any profit
in any shape to expect
that moment the weight
of that man's authority —
its probative force in the
character of circumstantial
evidence, in favour of
the truth of the opinion
in the support of which
it is employed is
reduced to 0.

But, for the opposite reason, when in so far as
instead of a source of reward, the declaration of the declared adoption
opinion in question is such so circumstanced, that the declared adoption
of it promises a rather to become a at
the hand of human power source of punishment, in so far as is it probable
that instead of being accompanied with the consciousness
of a violation of moral or religious duty, it was is
by a sense of duty that a the man was led engaged or driven
or at least led to the profession and inculcation of
it.
