II Doctrine
Ch. Recantation
76 6
No: Yes: in the eyes of by whosoever has no other means
of judging them what are afforded by their respective situations positions,
in the seat of the convicted lunatic will always
be sitting the man of piety sincere piety — in the seat
of the man of him in power by the exercise of whose power
he is placed in that seat of humiliation, the exalted
hypocrite. In a case of statute law he hypocrites will be held
in all who voted for the law among legislators, among Judges all who
without expression of their regrets concerned in the execution
of it: under that judge-made law which has screened
itself under the name of Common Law, he will behold
the monstrous and bef and monstrous hypocrite composed of the
a Judge in front, and with a lurking legislator, growing out
of the back of the Judge.
Thus it is that in every instance in which
this ceremony of recantation is prescribed on the one part
submitted to in the other, an example is holden up to view afforded
of the triumph of power and hypocrisy over truth and
innocence.
As to the recanter the reciter of the prescribed
formulary, binding sinking under the force thus applied to him
by the hand of tyranny his condition may be likened to that
of the wayfaring man passenger, from whose lips the robber
by whom he has been rifled, has, by the terror mention of assassination extorted a promise or
an oath of mercy
