Church II Doctrine
Ch. Recantation

1

§.3. J

To In these latter times the case of heresy supposed spiritual delinquency in matters of on the ground of religious persuasion the application of this instrument
of oppression is has happily not been frequent.
Would it were equally so. In the case of temporal
delinquency would it were equally rare it were is to be
wished rather than hoped to see it equally rare is matter a subject
rather for desire than hope. Custom lords it over
Reason in those seats of arbitrary rule.

Think of the intellectual blindness of that man of pretended service who does
not see in what a multitude of cases of any such
self condemning declaration falshood is the certain plain manifest
and indubitable fruit.

Think of the moral depravity of that guardian of
public morals who seeing this to be the result of the
imposed exacted penance, perseveres notwithstanding scruples not in the
exaction of it.

To prescribe forms of judicial procedure belongs
not to this work. Suffice it just to hint, that for to
whatsoever may be intended in the way of humiliation,
nothing in the way shape of falshood ever can be necessary

Such will has been the declared opinion of the Minister
of Justice — will not this be humiliation enough
in by a declaration to this effect is can not the cup of humiliation
be rendered bitter enough? By the hint of depravity
must mendacity be infused into it. Such is my own opinion
of my own conduct. In the very teeth of truth must this a declaration to any such
effect as this be added?
