VII. Qualifications continued. Declaration concerning of religious persuasion

I. Present practical utility fitness. 1. Modes of declaration. 1. Momentary viz. Subscription.
2. habitual: viz. 1 direct, viz. by creeds: 2. indirect by junction
in fixt forms in which opinions are implied.

II. Mischiefs of Subscription — See the J. so intituled — 1. to sinister faculty — 2. to
moral do insincerity 3. to intellectual do — self delusion — principle of — is in the subscriber
on others exposed to his influence. 6. It makes him a fit tool for political corruption) non subscribing 6. to others, by the ill-will, the envy it
excites in him towards them. 7. It engages him, in consideration of his own
delinquency and thraldom to endeavour of his abolition — i.e. to debar others from
liberty and in. 8. Debar the same pro tanto from all improvement. Pro tanto exclude all improvement
If good in religion, apply this instrument to all arts and sciences.

III. Further mischiefs of creeds — they ensure the habit: of Subscription, a insincerity
act, performed under coercion, repentance might be avowed. Creeds, habitually
joined in, bar this avowal.

Both creeds subscription Shall time effectually than subscriptions, creeds exclude
improvement — see Fixt Forms.

1. Distinction between truth and impertinence in regard to religious propositions.
2. From the truth of a doctrine i.e. in the opinion of others, follows not any obligation,
bending down to believe it. Self conceit and despotism in the current language about truth
Truth of itself and with regard independently of impertinence, viz. as to moral breaches according to the principle of utility.

II. Practice of earliest times. I. Subscription now temp. Jesu and Apostolurum.
II. Creed, supremely simple — I believe Jesus to be the foretold Christ or
commissioned from God.

IV. Practice Anglicé. ☞ For titles 1. doctrine. 2. mode of professing his office. 3. Persons
adopting professing and 4. Occasions of adopting professing, see the written Sheets §. 1. 2

V. Practice Scoticé. 1. Subscriptions — 1. doctrines as per Confession of faith — less
absurd than English 39 Articles — Mode of professing quare?
3. Persons adopting now but Clerical. No Occasions now but at entrance.
Mischiefs thence much less than Anglicé.

VI. Present practical Utility. It coincides with do abstract. Inconvenience from
change, now. 1. As to persons, all but priests: 2 occasion, on .
3 As to mode, to declaration of evidence, substitute promise of non-disconformity
in the discharge of orally performed duties recovering liberty of publication. Reason of this promise —
to prevent existing members of congregation from being shocked by delivery
of doctrines repugnant to what they have been used to consider true and important.
