XI. Dignities. In any and what shapes shall factitious dignity be attracted
to the office? In the 10 pages of marginals

I. Present abstract utility. 1. Mischievousness Factitious dignity has created

II. Mischievousness of it as applied to religious leaders. 1. Respect a reward belonging
to the moral or popular sanction ought contrivance for
subjecting it to sinister interest. Respect natural and best reward
for service. Every contrivance which in this or other shape renders reward independent
of service is pernicious. Reward made or kept independent of service can not be kept for so,
but for to be rend bestowed without service. All such bestowal is peculation. Reward
bestowed without service is a bounty in worthlessness — a bounty in illegitimate dependence,
political and personal.

Factitious dignity serves as a shield against merited concern: as a shield to

respect towards the governing hand.

General Liberty of withholding respect and manifesting disrespect consistently with abstinence
from transgression is a necessary check on misrule. To preach claim it
the mischievous is to deem passive obedience and non resistance salutary and
obligatory.

False plea in frowns of Church dignities — necessity or utility in augmenting the impressiveness
of their discourses — the efficacy of their service.
Sole teachers of religion, parish priests: not to them, but to sinecurists is dignity
given.

Parochial preached not being susceptible of conspicuous, extra services and extra
merit, no extra reward is needful or useful here — in this or any other shape —
Such dignity is not needful for extraparochial i.e. literary services. For such
services the naturally attracted rewards suffice.

Want of proportionality in these dignities suffices to render them unfit for rewards
for such extra service, even if performable

For literary services reward in this shape were it a fit one, ought not to be confined
to the Clergy. Works of lay defenders of religion are therefore more impressive — as
less exposed to the imputation of insincerity. No reason for supposing that, unless by accident they are bestowed
in contemplation of merit
The few good meritorious Bishops and other dignitaries prove not the utility of dignities
