Ch. Church its
§. Conflicting interests
2
§.3. Practical importance
1
Material when the
interest of the church
is the matter in question,
to know in which
sense (and in particular
as between two of
them) it is meant to
be employed. p1
2
The reason is, because
between the interests
of the Church — i.e.
ruling few & Church
i.e. subject many, a

3
1 It is the interest of
the few to have power
over the many: é
contra the interest
of the many: it is
their interest that
political power should

that the instruction
giving few should
have no more power
than if they gave no
instruction.
2 The interest of
the few is to extract
as much wealth as
they can, whether
any service be rendered
for it or not
3 Item. respect on
the same conditions.
4 It is also their interest
to expend in
administering their
duty and qualifying
themselves (as well
as on any non-pleasurable
occupation) as

can — or rather if
possible (receiving
as much emolument
as possible) to bestow
no labour at all.
5. Pride —
it is the interest of
the instructing few
as a means, (& an efficient

with wealth)
of obtaining respect
to display as much of
it as can be tolerated, so as to
arrogance. But the interest
of the subject Church is the reverse
