1. Principles
Ch.
§.1. Bridle and spur necessary.
1
Is there any reason
for teaching religious
doctrine? — this a
question to which
every man's mind
must have answered
before questions about
the mode of teaching
can have been put to
him.
2
Morality thence religion
(as to present
life) religion is useful
in proportion to the
bridle put by it on
the self regarding
& dissocial, affect
the spur applied to
the social affections
p.2.
Not but that by
predominance of the
self regarding in each
breast the happiness
of society would be
promoted. p2
4
But these & the
dissocial require no
spur — self regarding
— the parent dissocial
the eldest child are
apt to overpower the
younger offspring, — social
affection in early
stages of society
p2.
5.
To the actin social
acting with the self
regarding the no spur
too sharp — no bridle
too strong for the dissocial —
though even these
are necessary for
without them society the best laws
would not be executed
nor injury resisted
with enough force: but
human nature guards
against such deficiency.
