I. Principles Prelim
Ch. 3. Abuse
2
or 1
Considered as a cause of
criminality, or immorality,
imperfection is termed
abuse p5
or 2
Though Those who can
remedy it are ignorant
of the imperfection or its
remedy, the term abuse
can not be applied to them
with relation to them in
speaking of it — p.5
or 3
But suppose them apprized
of it, — it is not only
an abuse, but they are
morally chargeable with
it as its authors.
They being apprized of
its existence, if it be irremediable,
it rests on
them to shew it. p.6
or 4
Suppose them never to
have seen, or seeing to
have remedied imperfection
of this kind, how
difficult to clear the imperfection
from the character
of abuse, & themselves
from the imputation
of being the authors
of it. p.6
or 5
Question — Why authors?
Answer — Of authors two
sorts — creative & conservative.
Creative author, the cause
of its existence at some
past time — conservative
do at present. — p.6
or 6
Thus the press being free
may any individual
justly affix the title
of conservative author on
him by whose connivance
an abuse is suffered to
continue. p.6
or 6.(a)
Sole & conjunct author
self explanatory terms
Conjunct, conservative
authors applicable to the
joint.
or 7
Abuse & imperfection
not worth enquiring into
but for remedy.
Remedy for imperfection
is improvement
& for abuse — reform.
p.6.
or 9
Be the disorder in
body natural or politic,
remedy in the former
is seldom in the latter
scarce ever applicable
to it with success without
knowledge of its
cause.
or 10
Causes of abuse therefore
the subject of enquiry
under the next head.
