§. J. B. u
1
Result of this enquiry seen
elsewhere.
2
The circumstances of the
enquiry afford the
smallest possible grounds
for suspecting
partiality. The assumed
title is not a feigned one
3
J. B. at enmity with
no individuals at Oxford,
in amity with
some. He had no complaint
against the
constituted authorities —
no censure received from
them, no expectation
frustrated.
Of the bounty of the
well-wishers to learning
at their disposal, he
received some, and rejected
more. p.1.
4
J. B.s relations of the
same sort. 2 of his Great
grandfathers beneficed
clergymen. All his partiality
in favour of the
church. Some of the happiest
of his early days
spent in the families of
beneficed clergy. His
objections to enter a
dissenting chapel.
p.2
5
As to Scotland, he was
never within 200 miles
of it — never in habits of
intimacy with any
members of it's church
nor did he ever converse
with any on the subject.
His prepossessions derived
from Hume and Clarendon
unfavourable to it. The
state of the criminal
calendar in the two
countries pointed his attention
to the subject, and
for giving correctness to
his judgement, he made
the most of the opportunities
which lay in his way, p.3
6
From these marks his
name exposable in case
of falsehood. p.3.
