Ch. 2 Duties Forms
§.1. Abstract fitness
Part 3. Proper Duties

5

1
19. Anti-Pastoral rapacity.
(This comes under the
head of negative duties
at large.)

Understand the sort
of rapacity produced
by the situation
the priest is placed
in under Church
of England — viz. in
that of collector of
taxes for his own
use. p.19

2.
Another example
of a transgression
not to be found in
Britain but under
the Church of England.
p.19

3
Under any non-establishment,
no minister
having any
right to receive a
penny from any
of his flock, rapacity
has no ground to
stand on. p.19

4
Nor even under
Scottish church —
There are tythes indeed,
but they are as
rent charged on estates
— some granted
to laymen at the reformation,
and are
not levied by Churchman's
hands. p.19.

5
In no instance can
the exertions of the
priest encrease his
pay, nor does the
instructor's hand
find it's way into the
pocket of the pupil —
There rapacity is as
unknown as under
non-established
churches. p.20.

1
11 Anti-christian pastoral
pride — wealth
begotten, dignity
and power begotten.
For this too, recourse
must be had to the
discipline of the
Church of England.
p.21

2

The effect of pride
as arising from the
above causes, is to
render persons endowed
with a smaller
proportion of
good things, objects
of contempt, outwardly
manifested. But
the stronger this
sentiment is, in M
towards P, the less
disposed will M be
to render P any service
especially such
as requires his presence,
& the less the
disposition of P to
receive it, or his
power to receive it
to good effect. p.21

3
To this pride or to
none, the epithet
antichristian is
applicable. This condines
also to Anti pastoral
idleness — to
non performance
and non receipt of
the services of the
office. p.22.

4
Distinguish spiritual
pride
from
this. p.23

5
Of this the effect is,
to cause less service
to be rendered —
of spiritual pride
to cause no-one — &
better. p.23.

6
Of spiritual pride
the cause, the supposition
of possessing
the favour
of God. p.23

7
Spiritual pride
a bond of union as
antichristian do
is a cause of separation.
Under anti-
christian pride,
the despised are the
pupils of the priest
— under spiritual
do others (not of his
flock) who are conceived
to receive
less good instruction
than that which
flows from his lips.
p.23.

8
Anti-christian
pride confined to
the instructor —
Spiritual do shared
by his pupils. — To the
instructor is the
glory of having confirmed
the saving
knowledge. The end
of instruction
is advanced by it.
The pleasure of this
pride a social one,
in which the successfully
industrious
pupils share. p.24

12 Anti-Pastoral strife contentiousness
By this, as contradistinguished
from strife
at large, understand
any such strife as
arises between pastor
and pupil in consequence
of the discipline under
which they are placed.
This species of transgression
and its correspondent negative duty
must be looked for under
Church of England.
p.25

2.
Of it's tendency to weaken
the good effect of this
instruction, much need
not be said — and somewhat
has been said
suprà. p.25

3
The causes already
brought to view non
anti pastoral pride, rapacity,
dissipation,
ignorance, and idleness
— How can any
failure of his important
duty on the
part of the pastor,
fail to excite just
resentment in the
breast of the pupil?
Who is the just object
of this sentiment, the
individual, or the
system? p.25

☞ 9 Jany. 1814 Addend
Anti pastoral strife is
contentiousness — 1. as
between pastor and flock.
2. as between their church
and other Churches.
