Part III. Equality

Preferment hunting

18
For this pursuit assentation
necessary — and
for this species of insincerity,
the forced subscriptions
are well
adapted to fit a man.
Sincerity in preferment
hunting, a
mere incumbrance,
and if it be a virtue
it must be such, as
a man must be determined
to leave behind,
(while a creed &c. remain)
on entering into the
established church.
p.8

19
In case of difference
of opinion, to join
with him in whom
his hopes are greatest
without offending
those of inferior influence
— to varnish
all with imperturbable
complacency, are
the appropriate qualifications
of preferment
hunters. p.8.

20
For a portrait of the
preferment hunting
divine, let an artist
be placed opposite to
the receptacle of the
Holy Ghost, at the
dinner table of the minister
of the day. — But for
a conception, the sight
of the deportment of
a puss, to a cat's meat
barrow woman will
suffice. p.*8

21.
Secus in an unestablished
church.

No such ladder of preferment
has place
there. Advancement,
there is little room for.
And for countenance,
a minister depends
not on one or a few, —
but on all his hearers.
He must not strive
therefore, to
conciliate individual
favour, but general
respect. p.9

22
Neither is the minister
of a Presbyterian
established church, as
Scoticé p.10

23.
In all but 150 there
was not such inferiority,
as to tempt a man
to such a degrading
track. And as by a
recent law these have
been encreased, it is
to be hoped that Church
will be kept clear of
such a defect. p.10.

24
On this, as on other
occasions, mention
equality, some anti-
jacobin scholar gives
you to understand,
you mention anarchy
& democracy. p.11.

25.
But besides that democracy
is different
from anarchy, (as per
American states) yet
Scoticé where this
equality exists, the
government is monarchy.
p.11

26.
Whatever abuses
prevail in equity
courts, anarchy &c.
does not — yet their
maxim is, Equality
is Equity. p.11.
