Part 3 Perfection notwithstanding the spirit of benevolence of the author of the religion, such as prevalence of ill will towards opponents,æ the perversion of power to gratify it, that to the present purpose allusion will suffice.

Conceditur to the purpose of persecution, power has been carried to an extortant height, in lay hunds. But in this case, the abuse has originated in clerical hands. The height of the abuse has been apportioned to the facility experienced - & where sufficient power is vested, the facility is inexamined . p.1

What difference there is, is attached to the care of own compliance. The evil attached to refusal is, loss of the beneficial situations. Where persecution "persecution" is employed, the evil is of the positive kind.

In case where declaration of persuasion is regained without persecution for non compliance, the evil of insincerity is avoidable by foregoing the benefit— In case of persecution not, except by undergoing the punishment. p.5.

In case of non compliance, the evil of the persecution may be to any degree greater than where non investment is the penalty. But in the latter case, the evil to be dreaded is, from the declarations for the evil of insincerity is inversely as the evil by the fear of which it is produced. Ex fr To break a promise made under the pistol of a highwayman would, hardly injure a mans' character. p.5.
