Ch. 19. Episcopacy Post Topics

§. Paley examined

(1.

§. Paley examined.

1
In favour of Episcopacy
—Paley gives these reasons.
p. 1

2
1. It receives tranquility
and subordination among
the clergy. p. 1

3
2. It corresponds to the
gradations of civil
life, and provides for
each civil class, it's
class of clergy. p. 1

4
3. The same fund produces
more effect as
an allurement to men
of talent to enter into
the church. p. 1

5
J.B. When the mischiefs
already shewn as arising
from Bishops &c. are
are set against these
advantages the point
seems to be given up,
if so much power, dignity
and emolument
be expended for no better
purposes than
these. p. 1.

6
1. Tranquility received
Tranquility a desirable
thing, but received in
Scotland without a
single bishop in the
establishment as perfectly
as in England.
p. 2

7
2. "Subordination secured"—
Without superiors,
there is no
insubordination. But
the only use of subordination
is to secure
tranquility—suppose
it secured, there is no
use of subordination,
if it be not secured,
where then is the
use of subordination.
p. 2.

§. Paley examined.

8
3. "Corresponds to the
ranks of civil life
."
This is addressed to
the imagination—
as well might the
employment of crosiers
be stated as an advantage.
p. 3

9
4. Providing for edification
of each rank.

p. 3.

10
This must be providing
for some rank not provided
for under Presbyterianism
—viz. the nobility,
for whom (assuming
the argument)
provisions must be inadequate
Scoticé. p. 3.

11.
As to edification, it
may more edify a
Scotch nobleman to see
those kept on a level
with each other whom
Jesus commanded to be
kept so, than elevated
by the favour of Kings
some above the rest.
p. 3.

12
To any nobleman
is there greater facility
for obtaining
the company of a clergyman,
by his being
raised to the dignity
of a Bishop?—or by
the pride natural
to newly raised men,
is it likely to be more
agreeable? p. 11.

13.
5. Superior allurement
from the unequal
distribution.
p. 5.

14
To form this advantage
are assumed—
1. That the advantage
to the public encreases
as the number of the
clergy.
2 That they look to their
talents for discharge of
their duties for advancement.
3. That this forms a stimulus
productive of
considerable effects. p. 5.

§. Paley examined

15
Conceditur Number
not held up alone
as advantage, but
number of men of
talents
. But he could
not think that by
the alluring circumstances
as above,
men not of talents
should not be allured
in greater quantities
than the other.
p. 6.

16
E contra
1. There is no use in
extraordinary talents
for the priestly
office. p. 7

17
As in regard to Parish
priest is shown supra
(Cap. Principles. §.2.)
p. 7

18
As between Parish
Priests, emulation
an appropriate virtue
the only useful do.

19
If this a apply applies
to parish priests, so
a fortiori to a bishop.
A Bishop is only a
priest who has seat
in an assembly
where he is out of
place, & who governs
his fellow priests,
who could do just as
well without it,
witness Holland &c.
p. 7

20
2 Of all liberal
professions the clerical
profession, tho'
the prizes are so rich
& numerous, is that
where the chance
of success to men of
talent is least.
Bishopricks and other
dignities obtained
commonly by birth,
connections, or obsequiousness—
by talents
only in that proportion
which prevents
the order from being
despised. p. 8.
