Seriously — Elated with
hope of horrifying and
humiliating a brother
who elsewhere oppresses
as here oppressible,
Dean thought he had
found an instrument
without antiquated
quibble

To be serious, if in so far as on such an occasion such as this, it be is possible
to be serious. Elated and entoxicated with the hope of being
able by dint of terror the arm of flesh to humiliate a defenceless man
who, though in so many other countries he might
be of the number of the oppressors or in this country
numbered among of the number of the oppressed, this unhappy man Churchman has
to such a degree succeeded in imposing upon himself, as
to fancy to his friend an efficient instrument if not
of ulterior oppression at any rate of terror, or a quibbling
construction which in his own mind he has pleased
himself with putting upon the word new, when applied
to the Church of England; and for which construction he
thinks he has or hopes to make others think, he has
found a sufficient warrant, or an antiquated mass heap
or some rotten matter a piece of rotten rag he has picked raked up out of
the haystack of the law.

Thus says Tindal,
Christianity is
old as the Creation.

Tindal who assuredly, by giving to it so high an antiquity did not regard himself
as giving much support to the religion of Jesus, is at
any rate to the Church of England edition of it, by giv when to
his work to which on that subject he gives for a to the Christianity
as old as the creation, has been among the precautions of those who have given
before the Very Reverend person in this contrivance in the application of the antedating principle
