Defiance to all
to put a more favourable
interpretation
Now if of all that has just been stated developed there be
any thing that is not implicitly but unfairly contained in these two words
if all this — if any thing less than all this is meant
by them what is it? what other different interpretation can
the wit ingenuity of man find to put upon them.
26
Vain plea — the
words unguarded
intercourse confidential.
In vain would it be asked why thus draw any
more inference from a couple of unguarded words, employed
in the course of confidential intercourse between
friend and friend? — why seek thus to take any such
cruel advantage of an unguarded word or two? —
27
Effect of such unguardedness
— not utterance
of sentiments not
entertained: but
over confident thence
imprudent disclosure
of sentiments really
entertained.
No believer in Jesus
says, I believe not
in Jesus
No: by in the imprudence true it is that the affections disclosure
are disclosed is made: not so that the nature of them
is in any the least degree changed. By many a man
have such affections been entertained them having
ever been expressed: by no man can any such affections
ever have been expressed by whom they have not
been entertained ever have been expressed. By many
a man who did not believe in Jesus has been said I
do believe in Jesus: but by no man who at the time
believed in Jesus has it been said I do believe in Jesus
