In four, Excise scorned:
in the fifth and last,
the case too palpably
foul. Passage from

Four of these cases are to be found among the pointed
pages of the House: in four of them the representatives
minds A collaborative inference which on reading by the independent
Board is trodden under foot by Mr Vansittart and
his dependents, in his alone dependent Board: in the
fifth which was the last the stench of it was so foul
that the nerves even of Mr Vansittart could not
stand it: [and of what had ben done in the those former cases
the foulness of this last was an altogether natural consequence]
Notwithstanding all their experiences "We are under
no apprehension (say the Commissioners on this occasion)
we are under no apprehension but the present application
of the revenue laws should be thought to require
justification. It will be for your Lordships to determine
whether you will interfere in a business judicially
decided, and that in the manner proposed by
the defendant himself: and will on ex parte and
extrajudicial evidence stop a prosecution against
persons repeatedly convicted of offences against the Statute
for the protection of the Revenue. We shall think it
our duty to proceed in due course of law, unless,
as we trust will not be the case, we should receive your
Lordships positive orders to forbear. We
