E. Gibbon Wakefield on the Colonization Society's Plan

The way to consider the question of
Profits seems to be by ascertaining the
two following points.

1st. The circumstances which give
a value to land

2nd The degree in which it is
probable those circumstances will apply
to the land of this Company.

First. The value of land is
created altogether by Competition. The
degree of value depends wholly on the degree
of competition. Now on what depends the
degree of competition? Plainly the
degree of competition is governed by the
proportion of people to land
. This is so
plain that I am unwilling to dwell on
it
