eyes as improbable as it is certain in the eyes of a little circle
of friends who are accustomed to read my thougths as truly in
my countenance and deportment as in my words: and your
Critique will go of course into the hands of as many of them
as have thought the work of which it is the subject worth
this notice. As to the said Critique you and I are both alike persuaded
that it will do service to the cause of truth — to the side
on which truth is. The only differences there will be between us
will be the question on which that side is; and if the sense of
that difference sits as easy upon you as it does upon me
then will be very little matter for regret on either side. It will
be matter of unfeigned satisfaction to me sh<hi rend="superscript">d</hi> it even happen
to me to hear that the merit displayed in this production of
yours has received some appropriate reward at the hands of
His Grace of Canterbury his Lordship of London or any other official
Judge of such professional merits. Should any such devisable
event take place during the probably short remainder of
my life, you will gratify me much if you will make
yourself the harbinger of it and give me the Land of fellowship
