Let me speak of myself: to myself I am much — to myself
I am & must be an object of chief regard — and as I know this
so do I also know that I am to other men — a class of man —
an object of regard, — in that I have labored & labored not wholly
without success for more than three score years in the field of
improvement. With pleasure they see me living — but living
they will not see me much longer — they will see with pleasure
exhibited as nearly to the loss as may be.

As to grief — why should there be grief — They will
see me — me, my own monument "smiling at grief" Yes!
Grief is out of the question. For the death of a man who has
passed his 82d year what reason is there for grief! To those
who love me is it not or may I not say — "You have had possessed
me so long! — Grieve not that you cease to possess me —
Jero Sero una genuidse mortaluim was the aphorism of the
Roman father when the news was brought to him of the
death of his son.

Nunc in lacrymas dicat unque neque sum preum flelu
such was the wish of the Roman of the
pre Augustian Age.

My Auto-Icon may in time become the
object of pilgrimages — as the founder of the greatest
happiness principle — as the author of the
Auto Icon institution itself — From what countries
will pilgrims — from what will they not come?
