Let me speak of myself: to myself I am much — to myself
I am & must be an object of chief regard — and as I know this
so do I also know that I am to other men — a class of man —
an object of regard, — in that I have labored & labored
not wholly
without success for more than three score years in the field of
improvement. With pleasure they see me living — but living
they will not see me much longer — they will see with pleasure
exhibited as nearly to the loss as may be.
As to grief — why should there be grief — They will
see me — me, my own monument "smiling at grief" Yes!
Grief is out of the question. For the death of a man who has
passed his 82d
year what reason is there for grief! To those
who love me is it not or may I not say — "You have had possessed
me so long! — Grieve not that you cease to possess me —
