Dear Sir

We have had the misfortune to offend Mr Place as it
would appear beyond hope of conciliation. I had almost said
beyond the wish for it on our part. Mr Place is however, in
spite of his hasty temper, too good and too intelligent a
man to be lightly esteemed by those who know even as
much of him as we do; and certainly we do not part
with him free from regret that a separation could not be
accomplished upon other terms. The documents with which
you are now troubled are meant as a protection from
a far greater calamity - the diminution of the favourable
opinion you have been pleased to entertain of my
sons and myself. I am not aware of any thing however
which calls for your immediate investigation; have the
goodness therefore to lay all by at this point until
your leisure allows or arising circumstances demand
pedure, and to satisfy yourself with recollecting
that should a rumour on the business at all unfavourable
to ourselves reach you by any accident the
justification or attempt for it at least awaits your
hearing.

Jeremy Bentham Esqr.

such tasks is irksome of course and boys who frequently come under
such discipline are no favourites. Thus it is possible that
causes of irritation might exist mentally on both sides.

All however was nearly worked away before midsummer as
to the eldest boy, and much of the like unpleasantness had
vanished from the youngest. Since that period both seem
to possess it in renewed abundance not that it is even at
this moment on the increase — I trust that a good say
large portion has been brushed away what alarmed us
was the apprehension of a periodical replenishing.

Such I believe cordially to be the head and point of
their offence. Persecution and prosecution have left
their integrity unscathed — Their talents are far above
contempt, and I shall await the time when they will imbibe
the public spirit of their father and like them turn
their apathy to the opinion of those who may surround
them to a good account for their country. Their father
