superior to the generality of boys who came from other school
to ours at the same age and if their progress has been
slower than that of some of their school-fellows at Hazelwood
it has been swifter than that of others — The great
difference has been that it has cost us much more than
an average quantity of care and application.

my dear Sir to be guarded however against an injurious
opinion of the poor lads — It seems from their
own account that at their previous place of education
they had received corporal punishment as often as once
a day. From this or from some other cause or from
some combination of causes they came among us with
a degree of indocility and habitual suspicion that we
have rarely seen equalled — Every thing that crossed their
inclinations brought out the most unrestrained expressions of
irritability and the time which with better directed energies
might have passed pleasantly & profitably was too
often consumed in cavilling or pouting — To this was added
a copious lack of prudence and industry so that the
means of discharging even such fines as were admitted without
contention were but rearely in hand. The result
was that much of their extra-school hours passed in labour under
