must be an improvement, for I'm clearly of the opinion with one
of the members of the Education Committee at Paris when some one
proposed the extinction of the old system he proposed to give a
premium to any one who could invent a more useless, destructive
or absurd system than the one generally followed: all the law forms
of intricacy with great risk of running into confusion may be
thought necessary to keep order in a school by old professors
who have bottomed all their former practice upon fear without
ever attempting reason to produce free will but long experience
+has completely evinced that they are not necessary & therefore
+hurtful and a loss of much precious time besides the
danger of introducing chicane into their young minds, the
inseparable companion of all laws that have yet tormented
humanity. I shall bring with me a copy of my Will & be
happy to take advice of our old friend and excellent Patriot
